Magic and the Pride: Inclusion on the York River Cruise

Last week I had the privilege of performing close-up magic on the York Pride River Cruise, where my magic helped add a touch of wonder to the closing celebration of a phenomenal York Pride weekend. Magic has a way of bringing people together, no matter their background, creating a shared experience of wonder and joy.

As an ally of the LGBTQ+ community, it fills me with joy to see how magic transcends boundaries and fosters connections.

I believe magic transcends all boundaries and helps bring people together. For many LGBTQ+ magical icons like Derren Brown, Fay Presto, James Randi, Neil Patrick Harris, and Siegfried & Roy, magic has been a powerful platform for self-expression and acceptance.

Magic I feel is an art that has the power to overcome exclusion. It has not always been as positive as it should be. For example, The Magic Circle only admitted female members in 1991, and they still only represent a small minority.

The International Brotherhood of Magicians, one of the largest magic organisations in the world,  hosted a conference several years ago, that put the spotlight on Women, people of colour, the LGBT community and individuals living with disabilities who are magicians. This event was not just about showcasing talent; it was a powerful statement about society’s commitment to diversity and representation.

If you want some magic at your next event, please get in touch and I’ll happily discuss how we can work together!
